UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Faculty of Adab and Humanities Encourages Religious Moderation Among SPI Students Through Field Study at Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque
South Tangerang, FAH Online News – The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering contextual, inclusive, and reflective education. As a tangible manifestation of this commitment, 128 students from the Islamic History and Civilization (SPI) Study Program conducted a field study visit to Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
This activity was a direct implementation of the “Ciputat Intellectual Network” course taught by FAH Professor Prof. Jajang Jahroni together with Tati Rohayati. FAH UIN Jakarta designed the program to enable second-semester students from three SPI classes to gain a deeper understanding of religious spaces, history, and the practice of tolerance within Indonesia’s pluralistic society.
Prof. Jajang Jahroni emphasized that religious sites such as the Cathedral, Istiqlal Mosque, and the Friendship Tunnel are highly significant religious landmarks for the academic learning process at FAH. “We emphasize that students should not only learn history from books. They need to be physically present and witness firsthand how tolerance and interfaith relations are practiced in everyday life,” he stated.
During the visit, the students were guided by a museum officer named Lily to explore the Cathedral Museum, study collections of liturgical artifacts, and understand the historical development of Christianity within Indonesia’s national timeline. The students also directly observed the function of the Friendship Tunnel as a symbol of the strong harmony between the two major houses of worship.
FAH lecturer Tati Rohayati, M.Hum., added that this field study serves as an important foundation for SPI students to develop open-minded, critical, and humanistic perspectives through direct social experience. One of the students, Fauzan, expressed appreciation for the faculty’s program, describing it as a valuable experience that brought to life the theories of tolerance previously learned in the classroom.
Through this educational initiative, FAH UIN Jakarta hopes to continue strengthening national insight and the values of religious moderation among members of its academic community.
