Ramadan Fasting and Absolute Secularism in Balancing the World and Spiritually

South Tangerang, FAH Online News – Ramadhan 1447 H is an important momentum for Muslims to understand the nature of fasting not only as a ritual worship, but also as an instrument in facing the challenges of modern ideology. This was conveyed in the Mutiara Ramadhan program held by the Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN Jakarta, Monday (09/03/2026). In this activity, Prof. Dr. Sukron Kamil, M.Ag. emphasized that fasting is not just about enduring hunger and thirst, but rather an important instrument to fight "absolute secularism" in order to achieve prosperity in this world and the hereafter.

In his presentation, he revealed that Islam is actually a moderate religion in viewing the relationship between matter and spirituality. He dismissed the notion that Islam is an anti-world religion. On the other hand, Islam encourages its people to achieve happiness in the world (hasanah fiddunya) as stated in the sweep of the universe prayer. He called this concept "moderate secularism", in which Muslims were encouraged to be materially rich but still have strong spiritual depth and social concern.

Furthermore, he explained that the real threat to humanity is absolute secularism, namely an ideology that only prioritizes material wealth without having spiritual wealth. Ramadan fasting is here as a fortress for people not to get caught up in excessive lust, both sexual and material lust. By refraining from things that break the fast, humans are invited to strengthen three main elements within themselves: head (rationality), hand (empirical work), and heart (heart or spirituality).

Furthermore, he emphasized that fasting should not reduce a person's work ethic. This can be seen from how Ramadan actually drives the people's economy through the tradition of sahur, breaking the fast, and the obligation to give zakat fitrah. He emphasized that a person is judged not only by how big his wealth is, but by how big his social contribution is to the interests of many people.

” The value of spirituality in humans is the side that most differentiates humans from other creatures,” he said.

In closing, he invited Ramadan to be a momentum for humanization (upholding the value of goodness) and liberation (freeing humans from poverty and ignorance). Through mental training in this holy month, it is hoped that Muslims will not only become ritually obedient individuals, but will also be able to transform into people who are materially productive and spiritually bright for the surrounding environment.
