OBE Curriculum Construction in Support of E-universe Implementation
The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) held an important workshop to discuss the curriculum evaluation of the Tarjamah Study Program (Prodi). This meeting was attended by the Dean of FAH Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum., CIQnR, Prof. Dr. Darsita Suparno, M.Hum who is the head of the Tarjamah study program, resource person Dr. Muhammad Yunus Anis, S.S., M.A, and all Tarjamah Study Program lecturers on July 17, 2024 in the main courtroom on the 2nd floor of the FAH building. In this activity, the Dean of FAH said that the Tarjamah Study Program curriculum was last updated in 2020. He emphasized the need for curriculum evaluation, especially those related to technology such as AI and the digital era. The Dean also encouraged the participants to utilize this meeting as a place to discuss with experts and cultivate a sense of translation. Prof. Darsita highlighted the need for a review of the Tarjamah Study Program curriculum, given the challenges faced as the only study program of its kind in Indonesia.
Dr. Yunus introduced the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) based curriculum to Tarjamah lecturers. He hopes that Tarjamah Study Program can have experts who are qualified in one field as a characteristic of the study program. Dr. Yunus also encouraged cooperation or association with other Arabic Language and Literature study programs. In addition, he initiated a translation project course with the output of student internships at the Indonesian Translators Association (HPI) or other places to see firsthand the practice of translation in the field.
He also mentioned the Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka (MBKM) program, which initially received pros and cons but has now proven to be useful. The use of Turnitin to avoid student plagiarism was also proposed. Dr. Yunus emphasized the importance of lecturers assessing the ability of students who have produced works such as translated books, so that they do not need to take certain courses if their abilities are sufficient for the course indicators.
After breaks, prayers, and meals (ishoma), Dr. Yunus conducted a curriculum review of the Tarjamah Study Program. He discussed translation focusing on product, function, and process, and introduced parallel corpus, FET (dubbing, audio, subtitle), and the phenomenon of chain translation.
Dr. Yunus also highlighted the importance of tracer study to find out the career of alumni and meet the needs of stakeholders. In the vision and mission of the study program, it is necessary to add insights at the national and international levels. He also highlighted Jacob's theory (Intra/interlingual) and the importance of adjustment so as not to overlap between linguistics and translation. OBE emphasizes courses based on outcomes not study materials. For thesis, the translation should be corrected by others for objective assessment and the researcher should provide problem solutions in addition to conducting research. He also highlighted the theoretical differences between UNS and UI and gave examples of two scopus authors on Arabic translation research: Haider, Ahmad and Farghal, Mohammed.
This workshop is expected to produce concrete steps in improving the Tarjamah Study Program curriculum to be more relevant and adaptive to technological developments and industry needs.
