"News Article Writing Workshop: Improving Writing Skills with Drs. Suradi, M.Si."
South Tangerang, FAH News Online - A group of 4th semester students of the Library Science Study Program, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a News Article Writing Workshop with the theme "From Facts to Writing: Effective News Article Writing Techniques" in Abdul Ghani Theater Room lt. 5 Faculty of Adab and Humanities UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, on Thursday (26/06/2025).
The series of activities were opened by Tazka Noor Rizky and Siti Fatimah Nafisah as the Master of Ceremony (MC) who guided the course of activities until the end of the event. The first speech was given by the Chairperson of the Practical Librarian Autonomous Organization (PUSTIKUM), Nur Waidah. She said that this activity was a form of collaboration with the PUSTIKUM Autonomous Organization. "Thank you for the committee friends who have trusted and want to collaborate with the PUSTIKUM Autonomous Institute". In addition, Nur Waidah also said that the importance of this workshop activity in honing and improving the skills of writing news articles based on facts and data. She hopes that this workshop can provide benefits and open opportunities for participants to get to know the world of journalism, especially in writing news articles.
The chief executive of the News Article Writing Workshop, Fathir Ramadhan, expressed his deepest gratitude to the participants who had attended and the committee who had contributed to the implementation of this activity. He also conveyed the reasons for holding training activities for students, especially the reason for raising the theme of writing news articles. "The reason why I took this workshop was because I wanted to hold an interactive activity between the speakers and the audience, and the reason why I took this theme, namely because the students of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities still have an interest in the field of writing," he said.
A brief message was also delivered by Mrs. Fahma Rianti, M.Hum. as a lecturer in the Library Science Study Program and lecturer in charge of the Library Management Course. She explained that this activity was a form of the final project for the Library Management Course. She also advised that hopefully this workshop activity could run smoothly and provide benefits for the participants.
The workshop was attended by more than 20 participants, the majority of whom were students from the Faculty of Adab and Humanities. The resource person presented was a senior journalist, writer, and lecturer at the Emtek Digital Media Institute (IMDE), namely Drs. Suradi, M.Si or better known as Kak Sur.
His works include several published books, such as the book "Grand Old Man of The Republic : H. Agus Salim dan Konflik Politik Sarekat Islam" (Mata Padi Yogya, 2014), the book "Jalan Sunyi di Taman Bukit Duri : Guru-guru yang Mendedikasikan Hidupnya untuk Kemajuan SMAN 8 Jakarta " published by Kakilangit-Prenada Media Group in 2024, and others, as well as his other works in the form of news articles published in various newspaper media.
News must be based on facts and data
Mr. Sur explained the material in accordance with the theme about how data and facts in the field are poured into the form of news writing. He introduced the important elements in creating a verified news story supported by various data and facts obtained.
In addition, Sur described several methods of obtaining news material, such as direct and indirect observation; press conferences by inviting journalists to ask questions related to the context of the issues being discussed; through interviews, namely conversations between two or more people between interviewers and sources; and investigations as an advanced stage in the process of collecting news material.
The general presentation of news and the introduction of the 5W+1H principle or formula were also presented by him. In addition, he emphasized the importance of using the 5W+1H principle in making captions or photo captions that provide context or additional information about the photo.
As a form of application of the material previously presented, the resource person invited the participants to practice reporting directly in the environment around the Faculty of Adab and Humanities. Some of the results of the participants' coverage were read directly and reviewed by the resource person. One of the participants delivered news results on the issue of lecturer tardiness by interviewing one of the Library Science Study Program students.
The event was closed with a souvenir handover session to the resource person, Drs. Suradi, M.Si. and the general chairman of the PUSTIKUM Autonomous Institution, Nur Waidah as well as a group photo session with the participants and invited guests who had attended.
The entire committee hopes that the participants can make the most of this training activity and the productivity of participants in producing news articles is expected to increase.
