National Seminar: How to Achieve Dollars and Rupiah as a Freelance Translator
South Tangerang, FAH Online News - Tarjamah Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta, held a national seminar with the theme "How to Achieve Dollars and Rupiah as a Freelance Translator" on Monday, October 28 2024. This seminar took place at the Theater, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Prof. Dr. Bustam Abdul Ghani, 5th Floor, and presents Hikmat Gumelar as a resource person, with moderator M. Zacky Mubarak, MA. This seminar was opened by Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M. Hum., Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, and attended by the Chair of the Tarjamah Study Program, Prof. Dr. Darsita S.
In his speech, Prof. Darsita S. said that this seminar aims to equip students with practical insight into the world of freelance translation. “Through this seminar, we can learn how to build a portfolio and get valuable tips for becoming a professional freelance translator,” he said.
as moderator, Zacky Mubarak, MA, encourages students to join the Indonesian Translators Association (HPI) community to expand their network in the translation industry. "Joining HPI can provide many benefits, including the opportunity to collaborate and develop a career in the world of translation," he added.
In his presentation, Hikmat Gumelar explains the breadth of segmentation in the world of translation, covering the literary, medical, legal, technical and other fields. “Becoming a freelance translator requires careful preparation. Translators must master special software such as SDL Trados or memoQ to increase work efficiency,” explains Hikmat.
Wisdom also emphasizes the importance of having a continuously updated portfolio and a professional CV. “Freelance translators should invest time in learning and joining communities like HPI. This is an important investment in the world of translation,” he added.
Closing the session, Hikmat reminded participants to continue to enrich themselves, especially amidst technological advances, such as the use of AI which is now starting to enter the realm of translation. “What we learn today is always changing, so it is important for translators to keep learning and keep up with developments,” he concluded.
This seminar succeeded in opening up participants' insight into the challenges and opportunities in the world of freelance translation, as well as providing them with practical provisions in seizing opportunities in both local and international markets.
