MSKI Orientation Day 2: Study Success Strategies and FAH's Commitment to Support Student Academics

South Tangerang, FAH News Online - Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is again continuing the series of Academic Orientations for New Students in the Master of Islamic History and Culture (MSKI) Program for the Even Class of 2024/2025. Having previously introduced students to an academic culture of integrity, on the second day this orientation focuses on learning experiences and successful strategies for completing studies at MSKI.

Study Experience at MSKI: The Key to Successfully Completing Studies

The first session began at 1:00 PM via Zoom Meeting, featuring Iqbal Maulana, M.Hum., an MSKI FAH alumnus, who shared his experiences studying at MSKI. Iqbal, who enrolled in 2022 and graduated in 2024, emphasized that learning at MSKI is research-based and strongly rooted in methodology, integrating historical theories, philological approaches, and perspectives on Islam and Indonesia.

Additionally, he highlighted the characteristics of MSKI lecturers at UIN Jakarta, such as Prof. Dr. Jajat Burhanuddin, Prof. Dr. Amelia Fauzia, and Prof. Dr. Abd Wahid Hasyim, who are highly competent and always open for discussions.

As an alumnus, he shared several tips for students to graduate on time, including setting clear study plans, managing time effectively, and preparing academic requirements early, such as publishing research papers and achieving a minimum TOEFL/TOAFL score of 500.

Research and Writing in Islamic History

The next session featured Prof. Amirul Hadi, M.A., Ph.D., who discussed research and writing strategies in Islamic history. He emphasized three main aspects in historical writing: facts, interpretation, and historiography.

This session equipped students with an understanding of the historical research process, including topic selection, source collection, source criticism, and academic writing techniques. Prof. Amirul Hadi also reminded students that historical research requires strong discipline and the ability to utilize technology in searching for and managing sources.

FAH’s Commitment to Supporting Student Academic Success

To conclude the orientation series, Dr. Ida Farida, MSLI., Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, stressed the importance of understanding the stages of historical research and instilling a culture of academic discipline.

"Islamic history has its own unique characteristics. If students have proficiency in Arabic or Islamic studies, these skills can be used to read and analyze manuscripts or other historical sources," she stated.

She also reminded students to optimize their time, reduce distractions from social media, and take advantage of opportunities to discuss with lecturers who are always open to mentoring.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mauidlotun Nisa, M.A., Secretary of the MSKI Study Program, stated that the new students come from various regions and academic backgrounds, not only from the Bachelor's Program in Islamic History and Civilization at FAH.

To conclude, Prof. Dr. Jajat Burhanuddin, M.A., reminded students to remain faithful to academic principles and disciplined in their research.

"There are many important things to note and remember as a foundation for the learning process. I encourage students to graduate on time while maintaining high academic quality," he emphasized.

With the conclusion of this orientation, it is hoped that new students will be better prepared to undertake their studies at MSKI and develop high-quality research that contributes to the field of Islamic history and culture.
