MSKI and DSPI Invite UGM Professors of Educational History to Highlight AI in Historical Research
Tangeran Selatan, FAH Online News, Wednesday 8 October 2025, at the Main Meeting Room of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, an Academic Workshop was held with the theme “Artificial Intelligence and Historical Research.” This activity is a collaboration between the Islamic History and Culture Master's Study Program (MSKI) and the Islamic Civilization History Doctoral Program (DSPI) Faculty of Adab and Humanities.
The workshop presented Prof. Dr. Agus Suwignyo, MA, Professor of Educational History from the Department of History, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, as the main resource person. The event was moderated by Dr. Awalia Rahma, MA, and Prof. Jajat Burhanudin, MA and Dr. Mauidlotun Nisa, M.Hum. as host of activities.
The event was opened by Dr. Awalia Rahma, MA, as moderatoe then continued with Prof.'s presentation. Agus Suwignyo, who has a status at the beginning of “the relevance of artificial intelligence in historical research, especially in facing the challenges of historicism in the post-truth” era. In his presentation, Prof. Agus explained that the position of historical researchers in the development of AI can be understood in three main domains, namely as a research method, as a research object, and as an outlet for research results.
The discussion was warm and in-depth, with high enthusiasm from the participants who highlighted ethical issues, data validity, and the limits of using AI in academic and historiographic contexts. Through this activity, participants gained a new understanding that AI is not only used as a technological tool, but can also be used as a space for methodological reflection that demands historical sensitivity and ethical responsibility from each researcher.
The event closed at 16.00 WIB by the moderator, with the confirmation that the use of AI in historical research must be carried out critically and proportionally, in order to remain grounded in the basic principles of historical scientific methodology.
