MSKI and DSPI FAH UIN Jakarta Hold Academic Workshop with UKM: Strengthening Research Methodology and Scientific Traditions of SKI Master and SPI Doctoral Students

South Tangerang, FAH News Online — Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a Workshop: Sharing in Islamic Thought, Research Methodology, and Academic Writing for students of the Master of History of Islamic Culture (MSKI), and the Doctor of History of Islamic Civilization (DSPI) presented guest resource Prof. Ahmad Sunawari Long from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as Adjunct Professor, on Friday, 05 December 2025 in the History of Islamic Civilization Docror Classroom, 3rd Floor, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.

This interactive activity aims to strengthen the research abilities of postgraduate students, especially in strengthening literature review, theoretical frameworks, and scientific writing practices that comply with the standards of reputable international journals.

Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum., emphasized the importance of strengthening research methodologies to create graduates who are adaptive and competitive globally.

“Master's and Doctoral students must be directed at scientific abilities that are not only strong in theory but also relevant to the needs of society and the development of science. "Through this workshop, we hope to form a researcher character who is critical, innovative and ready to contribute to the international academic map," he said in his speech.

He also said that academic cooperation with SMEs was FAH's real effort to create a global research network and encourage the increase in reputable scientific publications.
In the introductory session, the Master of SKI lecturer Prof. Amir emphasized the importance of a broad approach in historical studies that history is not limited to memorizing information, but touches on aspects of social movements, culture and societal dynamics. He also added that students must master various methodological approaches in research. In general, in interpreting local phenomena, students need to consider the context, so they are not always fixated on Western theory raw.

The activity was followed by a presentation from Prof. Ahmad Sunawari Long. In delivering the material, Prof. Sunawari Long provides a lot of conceptual and technical strengthening of research, especially the importance of literature review and finding gaps of study.

Some important points he emphasized are that Literature reviews can utilize Scopus indexed sources and support technologies such as AI. The ability of Masters and Doctoral students to obtain data, analyze and review scientific articles must be more mature than S1, especially in looking at the advantages and disadvantages of other articles. Apart from that, a gap of study is a must to show newness in research.

He added that there is no entirely new research, but it is innovation in theory, concept or analysis that is the value of novelty. Then, the Problem of the study is a research issue, not just a technical problem. He also asserted that Western theory could still be used for the context of research on local civilizations through the process of integration, not total rejection.
One important point of his statement is that criticism in academics must be objective and scientific, not attack certain parties or theories. He expanded his opinion by providing a new illustration that the article in Scopus Q1 really emphasizes the quality of analysis and clarity of the research gap.

He also strengthened his opinion with the example of one culture in Malaysia, namely an academic culture that really encourages timely graduation (GOT), in this case supervisors and students will receive rewards. Good research management methods for students must be measured through milestones in the Gantt Chart.
In one of his quotes, Prof. Sunawari emphasized:
“Novelty doesn't always mean finding something that has never existed. This novelty is our innovation in developing inherited theories and knowledge. That's where our academic contributions are recognized.”  Prof. Ahmad Sunawari Long

The presentation of the material was interactive, closing the question and answer session with the enthusiasm of the participants.
This workshop is expected to enrich the insight of Master of SKI and Doctoral students of SPI in writing methodologically strong theses and dissertations and has significant scientific contributions. FAH targets similar activities to become ongoing programs as part of improving the quality of postgraduate research.
