Librarian and User Interaction in Islamic Communication Perspective
Communication is a very important aspect in various fields of life, including in the world of libraries. Libraries as information centers have a major role in disseminating knowledge to the public. One of the important services in libraries is reference services that require interpersonal communication skills between librarians and users.
From an Islamic perspective, communication has values that are reflected in the Qur'an and Hadith. The principles of Islamic communication teach how to communicate well, effectively, and in accordance with Islamic ethics. This article will discuss the application of Islamic communication principles in reference services. Previously, it is necessary to know the essence of reference services. Reference services in libraries aim to help users obtain the information they need in an effective and efficient manner. This service relies on good interpersonal communication so that information can be delivered clearly and accurately. Reference librarians must have good communication skills in order to understand the information needs of users and provide appropriate responses.
Interpersonal communication in Islam has high moral and ethical standards. Good communication is not just talking, but also reflects honesty, wisdom, and gentleness in its delivery. Therefore, the application of Islamic communication principles in reference services can improve the quality of library services and create a harmonious relationship between librarians and users.
Some Islamic communication principles that can be applied in libraries to interact with users include:
- Qaulan Sadidan (Speaking Honestly)
Honesty is one of the main principles in Islamic communication. In reference services, librarians must convey correct and accurate information to users. If librarians do not know the answer to a question, they should direct users to a more competent source or cross-check before providing an answer.
- Qaulan Baligha (Speaking Clearly)
Effective communication must be delivered in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. Reference librarians need to ensure that the information provided does not cause confusion for users. The use of simple and easy-to-understand language is highly recommended in reference services.
- Qaulan Ma'rufa (Speaking Wisely)
Wise communication means conveying information in the right way according to the user's condition. Librarians must be able to adjust their communication style to the user's background so that the information can be received well.
- Qaulan Karima (Speaking with Noble Words)
Librarians must respect users by using polite words and appreciating their existence. If librarians are able to speak with good and noble words, users will feel appreciated and more comfortable in searching for information.
- Qaulan Layyina (Speaking Gently)
Reference services often involve intense discussions and exchanges of information. Therefore, librarians must be gentle in speaking, especially when dealing with users who may have difficult questions or are in a certain emotional state.
- Qaulan Maysura (Speaking Politely and Easily Accepted)
Politeness in speaking is an important aspect of Islamic communication. Librarians must communicate in a way that is pleasant, friendly, and does not cause tension for users.
The application of the six principles of Islamic communication above not only improves the quality of reference services, but also helps create a comfortable and conducive library atmosphere for all parties. Thus, the principles of Islamic communication can be a guideline for librarians in providing better and more valuable services to the community.
