Learning to Recognize Emotions Through Inside Out Movie: Students Hold an Interactive Workshop at TBM Bukit Duri Bercerita
South Jakarta, FAH Online News — Students from the Library and Information Science Study Program held an interactive workshop titled “Misi Rahasia: Temukan Emosimu!” on Saturday (07/05/2025) at TBM Bukit Duri Bercerita.
This event was part of a Library Management course project conducted by seven fourth-semester students of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The main objective was to introduce basic types of emotions and teach children aged 7–12 years how to understand and manage them.
Childhood is a crucial phase in emotional and social development. However, emotional literacy in non-formal settings such as TBM often receives limited attention. Through this workshop, the students aimed to provide a foundational understanding of emotions, such as joy, anger, sadness, fear, and disgust using a child-friendly, interactive, and engaging approach.
Around 30 children from the surrounding neighborhood participated in the workshop as active attendees. Throughout the event, the children showed great enthusiasm and were actively involved in every session.
The workshop also received full support from Kak Ning and Kak Sur, the Founder and Co-founder of TBM Bukit Duri Bercerita. They helped facilitate the place and gave guidance and encouragement to the organizing committee..
Understanding and Managing Emotions
The workshop opened with a warm welcome from the organizing team and TBM representatives, followed by a group singing session of the TBM Bukit Duri Bercerita anthem, led by Kak Ning. This moment fostered a sense of unity and built excitement among participants and organizers.
The main activity continued with a group screening of the animated film Inside Out. The film served as both a medium and introduction to help children understand various basic emotions such as joy, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust. Chosen for its engaging visuals and light storyline, the film features characters representing emotions that are easy for children to recognize and connect with.
Following the screening, the children joined a story discussion session. They were encouraged to freely express their thoughts and share which emotions they observed, helping assess their level of understanding.
Next, the children were given a “mission” and played the role of little detectives tasked with solving emotion-related challenges. Ayesha and Wildan delivered the educational content using props representing Inside Out characters to make the learning process more appealing and relatable. To keep the children energized, the session included fun ice-breakers led by Kholifa and Azzahra, along with a quiz segment with prizes to boost engagement and excitement.
Afterward, participants took part in a reflective activity by categorizing and placing emotion stickers on a prepared board based on what they had learned. This served as a fun and visual way to reinforce the material.
Throughout the workshop, children appeared cheerful and highly engaged. The interactive approach allowed them to express themselves more freely and better understand the different emotions introduced during the session.
The workshop left a positive impression on the participants. Several children who were interviewed after the session shared their excitement. Maulida, one of the participants, said the event was really fun and enjoyable. Similar responses came from Baim and Azwa, who expressed their happiness throughout the activities. They also thanked the committee for the engaging material, fun games, and the snacks and prizes they received. The warm and interactive atmosphere made the day a memorable learning experience for them.
Kak Ning, Founder and head of TBM Bukit Duri Bercerita, who was present throughout the event, also expressed her appreciation.
“Thank you to the students who came to TBM Bukit Duri Bercerita and spent time with these amazing children. I hope the knowledge shared can be well received and beneficial for them,” said Kak Ning.
The event concluded with a small gift presented to the TBM management, followed by a group photo session with all participants and the organizing team.
Through the workshop “Misi Rahasia: Temukan Emosimu!”, the organizing committee hopes the material shared can have a lasting impact and be applied by children in their daily lives. The committee also hopes this small initiative can become a meaningful step for children in understanding their feelings better, expressing them wisely, and growing into more confident individuals in facing life’s challenges.
