International Seminar on Critical Muslim Studies Held at FAH UIN Jakarta

FAH Building, FAH Online News – Faculty of Adab and Humanities again presents international scale academic activities through the “International Seminar on Critical Muslim Studies”, which will be held on November 28 2025 in the Main Courtroom, 2nd Floor of the FAH Building. This seminar presented a resource person from Minnesota State University, Prof. Danielle Haque, and Hasnul Insani Djohar, Ph.D. (Lecturer in English Literature), with moderator Luthfiana Dwi Rakhmawati, MA. (Lecturer in English Literature). This activity was attended by around 100 students from various study programs within FAH.

This seminar was held as an effort to broaden the horizons of the academic community regarding the latest studies on Critical Muslim Studies, an interdisciplinary approach that examines Islamic issues through critical, cultural, political and social perspectives. This activity opens up a space for dialogue that brings together international perspectives with local scientific contexts, so that participants can see the development of contemporary Muslim studies in a broader and deeper way.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities expressed his appreciation to the resource persons and the entire committee for the implementation of this international standard scientific activity. He emphasized the importance of bringing global discourse to the campus environment as an effort to enrich thinking, expand academic networks, and strengthen FAH's position in the international education arena.

“Through this seminar, we hope that students and lecturers can gain a new understanding of the dynamics of Muslim studies today and be able to relate them to scientific issues that are developing both at the national and global levels. Activities like this are very strategic to strengthen intellectual capacity, as well as in line with FAH's vision and mission to become a superior, competitive and internationally competitive faculty,” he said.

During the presentation session, Prof. Danielle Haque presents in-depth material regarding the development of Critical Muslim Studies in the global academic realm. He explained the critical framework used in analyzing the construction of Muslim identity, the political dynamics of representation, and how Islamic discourse is produced in contemporary socio-cultural contexts. This approach not only expands theoretical understanding, but also opens up space for reflection for researchers to review the perspective on Islamic issues.

Hasnul Insani Djohar, Ph.D., also provides perspectives that link this study to Indonesian reality. He emphasized the relevance of critical approaches in reading texts, popular culture, and social dynamics involving Muslim communities. This collaboration of thought between international resource persons and local academics provided a rich understanding for all participants.

The material presented takes place interactively and applicatively, encouraging participants, especially students who attend in large numbers, to discuss, ask questions and explore various issues raised. The enthusiasm of around 100 participants showed high interest in the topics discussed and the need to expand academic approaches to Islamic studies.

This international seminar is expected to become an important forum for scientific development in the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, as well as strengthening academic networks with researchers and educational institutions at the global level. This activity is also part of FAH's efforts to create academic spaces that are inclusive, dynamic and responsive to scientific developments. (SN)
