International Adjunct Professor: Prof. Ian Buchanan Encourages Cultural Research Cooperation at FAH UIN Jakarta
Ciputat, FAH News Online – Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta in collaboration with the Center for International Cooperation Services (PLKI) held the International Adjunct Professor: Collaborative Research in Literary and Cultural Studies event. This event presented Prof. Ian Buchanan, a Professor of Critical Theory and Cultural Studies from the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, School of Humanities and Social Inquiry, University of Wollongong, Australia, as the main resource person.
The event, which took place on Friday, aims to deepen understanding of cultural studies and critical theory, and provide insight into research in the field of literary and cultural studies. Apart from that, this event is also an important momentum in building opportunities for research collaboration between FAH UIN lecturer Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and international experts in the fields of cultural studies and critical theory.
This event was opened by the moderator, Ida Rosida, M.Hum, which was then followed by remarks from the Dean of FAH UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M. Hum. In his speech, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum emphasized the importance of cultural studies in a multidisciplinary context and international collaboration to improve the quality of research in Indonesia. He also expressed his appreciation for the presence of Prof. Ian Buchanan is expected to open new horizons in literary and cultural research at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
Main Material: History and Relevance of Cultural Studies
In the first session, Prof. Ian Buchanan delivered his presentation regarding the main material, namely Literary and cultural studies. He explained a brief history of cultural studies including figures including Stuart Hall, Raymond William, Michele Faucault, and others. He emphasized that cultural studies is a multidisciplinary study where the study borrows approaches and theories from other scientific disciplines such as anthropological studies, social sciences, political science, gender studies, media studies and other fields of study, so that any field can apply the cultural studies approach in its research.
Resource person, Prof. Ian Buchanan holds a BA and PhD in English Literature and Comparative Literature programs at Murdoch University, graduating in 1995. Her PhD dissertation was titled 'Heterology: Towards a Transcendental Empirical Approach to Cultural Studies. His areas of research are cultural studies, critical theory, and human geography.
Coaching Clinic Session: Improving the Quality of Participant Research
After the presentation session, the event continued with a coaching clinic session, where participants consisting of lecturers presented their research plans in the fields of literature, culture and linguistics. In this session, Prof. Buchanan provided direct feedback and suggestions to improve the quality of the participants' research.
This coaching clinic session is one of the parts most anticipated by participants because it provides the opportunity to get direct guidance from international experts who are experienced in cultural studies.
International Collaboration in Literary and Cultural Research
This event closed with a discussion regarding research collaboration opportunities between FAH UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and Prof. Ian Buchanan. Prof. Buchanan expressed his interest in establishing further research collaboration, Dean of FAH, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum welcomes this idea and hopes that this collaboration can be realized in the near future.
This event succeeded in building an academic collaboration network between FAH UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and the University of Wollongong, as well as opening up opportunities for academics in Indonesia to engage in broader international research. The participants who attended felt that they had received many new insights and were motivated to further explore literary and cultural studies in their research.
With this event, it is hoped that literary and cultural research in Indonesia can continue to develop, with the support of increasingly strong international collaboration.
