Instant Trap? Impact of Using AI in Writing Capabilities
Technological development has been felt so rapidly recently, especially with the presence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology which has changed our lifestyle and daily perspective. This technology is designed to imitate the intelligence of living creatures in solving problems so that it is able to offer various easy access to information and significant time efficiency for its users. The integration of AI into various aspects of needs such as education, economics, social, etc. is also inevitable as a new innovation. In the field of education, the presence of AI has both pros and cons amidst the chaos of academic activity.
One of the most obvious contributions of AI is its ability to overcome initial writing barriers or what is often known as writer's block by providing instant inspiration for writers. With the help of AI, apart from helping in creative writing, it also greatly contributes to scientific writing. The majority of students feel that AI is very helped in looking for references and topic ideas because this technology functions effectively in designing the initial structure of writing and organizing thoughts that were originally unstructured. A small-scale study even noted that 88% of respondents felt AI was very helpful in finding ideas or writing topics because this tool stimulates creativity while broadening users' knowledge horizons.
In addition to helping in the search for ideas, AI is very useful in improving the quality and accuracy of grammar and enriching the use of diverse vocabulary. Research shows that a large number of students feel more confident after using AI, because apart from providing clear and professional advice, this also works well in increasing self-confidence because AI acts as an automatic corrector that ensures the resulting text is free from basic errors so that writers feel more comfortable in expressing their ideas in a language that may not be their mother tongue. Students can discover new vocabulary through synonym recommendations provided by the system so that their vocabulary becomes richer with the intensity of use of the application.
As is known, there are many sophisticated platforms that are commonly used, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grammarly, each of which has a specific function to support the smooth running of academic activities. Despite offering a variety of tempting technical conveniences, AI-generated text often has significant limitations due to a lack of deep context understanding and language styles that tend to feel rigid or generic. To ensure that the writing must have a human style equivalent, the author must re-polish it with check and revise. This limitation arises because AI itself works in algorithmic mechanisms that are probability, or full of possibility.
Another concern with the use of AI, especially for users, is the high potential for dependency which of course can hinder critical thinking strategies. Again, research also proves that uncontrolled use of AI can make students less involved in cognitive processes because they are too used to accepting instant solutions provided by the system without making substantial intellectual efforts. This is quite an ironic paradox considering that advances in AI were initially predicted to provide maximum practicality in supporting needs. Ultimately, a balanced approach is needed, namely students utilize AI to increase efficiency and get technical feedback while maintaining active involvement in critical thinking and developing distinctive arguments in their own way.
