From Selling Risoles to Becoming the Best Graduate, the Inspiring Story of Mafatihatul Magfirah

Auditorium, FAH Online News – An emotional yet spirited atmosphere filled the 140th graduation ceremony of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, held at the Harun Nasution Auditorium, Campus 1 of UIN Jakarta, on Saturday (23/05/2026).

The moment became even more memorable when one of the best graduates from the Arabic Language and Literature Study Program, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Mafatihatul Magfirah, delivered a speech on behalf of the graduates with an inspiring and heartfelt address. The speech was presented before the university leaders, Rector, Vice Rectors, Deans, lecturers, parents, and all graduates attending the ceremony.

Mafatihatul Magfirah was awarded the title of best graduate at the 140th Graduation Ceremony of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, achieving a GPA of 3.96 with cum laude honors. She completed her studies in the seventh semester through a non-thesis pathway by publishing a scientific article in the SINTA-indexed journal entitled “A Comparative Study of the Macrostructure and Microstructure in Al-Mu‘jam al-Wasīṭ, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, and Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia: Implications for Digital Lexicography.” (https://doi.org/10.58194/eloquence.v4i3.3035 )

In her speech, she emphasized that she stood not only for herself, but also for everyone who had ever felt doubted, afraid, and close to giving up while pursuing their dreams.

“Because, in truth, we can become anything we aspire to be,” she stated confidently.

She also described the various struggles students face during their academic journey, from living far from home, studying while working, actively participating in organizations, to dealing with economic limitations. According to her, reaching graduation is not merely about intelligence, but about resilience and the courage to keep moving forward through the long process of academic life.

In her speech, Mafatihatul Magfirah also shared the story of her modest family background. She is a daughter from Madura who dreams of becoming a lecturer. Her father works as a driver, while her mother runs a small shop beside their home. From her parents, she learned the values of hard work, sincerity, and responsibility in life.

“Education is not merely about obtaining a degree, but about carrying the hopes of our family toward a better life,” she remarked.

During her university years, she also learned independence by selling risoles to help support her daily needs. For her, every sincere effort is never wasted and becomes part of the process of self-development.

In addition, her experiences participating in the International Community Service Program (KKN) at the Indonesian School in Jeddah and interning at the Hajj Affairs Office in Jeddah became some of the most memorable moments in her academic journey. These experiences made her more confident, broadened her horizons, and encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone.

On that occasion, she also encouraged fellow graduates to continue learning, adapting, and growing amid the rapid changes of the modern era, without losing the values of humanity, empathy, and concern for others.

Closing her speech, Mafatihatul Magfirah expressed gratitude to the lecturers, campus staff, security officers, fellow students, and especially her parents, who had become an essential part of the students’ educational journey until they successfully completed their studies.

The atmosphere in the auditorium grew even warmer when she ended her speech with a traditional rhyme that was welcomed with enthusiastic applause from the audience.

“Going to Jeddah carrying hopes,
returning home with meaningful stories.
Thank you for all the guidance,
may a master’s scholarship accompany me in the future.”
