FAH UIN Jakarta Pioneers Doctoral Program in Islamic History and Civilization
South Tangerang, FAH News Online - The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta made a new history by holding a field assessment for the opening of the Doctoral Program in Islamic History and Civilization. This important event was held on the 2nd floor of the FAH building on February 26-28, 2025 and was organized by evaluators from various leading universities
The Rector of UIN Jakarta, Prof. Asep Saepudin Jahar, MA, Ph.D., said that this field assessment is part of UIN Jakarta's efforts to expand access to higher education, especially in the field of Islamic history which is still rare at the doctoral level in Indonesia.
A Bold Step Toward New History
The Dean of FAH, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, SS, M.Hum., CIQnR, revealed that the establishment of the SPI Doctoral Program is a long-held dream that is now beginning to be realized. the initiative to propose this doctoral program is a form of FAH's commitment as the oldest professor and pioneer in the development of Islamic history in Indonesia.
"We understand that FAH UIN Jakarta is the oldest faculty with a strong academic tradition. Now, we dare to take a step to approve this doctoral program. We hope that this will be a milestone for the development of Islamic history in Indonesia," said Dr. Ade.
He also emphasized that this program is highly anticipated by the academic community, especially since there is currently no SPI doctoral program in Indonesia. Many alumni have to continue their studies abroad due to limited domestic options.
"We pray like the Prophet during the Battle of Badr, may this proposal be successful. If it is successful, it will be a great development for SPI in Indonesia. However, if it doesn't work, we probably won't reapply," he added.
Islamic History Should Have Its Own Space
On the same occasion, Prof. Jajat Burhanudin emphasized the importance of developing Islamic history studies that have their own distinctiveness. According to him, although many universities have Islamic history, no one has specialized the study in depth as will be realized by the FAH doctoral program.
"In many universities, Islamic history is often merged into general history studies. In fact, Islamic civilization has its own characteristics that need to be studied in more depth," he explained.
He also highlighted the great opportunities for SPI at UIN Jakarta given the high student interest in this field.
"Palembang has a rich Islamic civilization, but there is no specific Islamic history program. The same goes for many other universities. With great potential and many enthusiasts, this program is very strategic to develop," he said.
Assessment Stages and Future Expectations
Based on the event rundown, the assessment included academic presentations, discussions with evaluators, and preparation of assessment results. The evaluators came from various universities, including Prof. Syamsun Ni'am, M.Ag. (UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung) and Prof. Ris'an Rusli, MA (UIN Raden Fatah Palembang).
The field assessment event which took place on the 2nd floor of the FAH building was not only a momentum for the opening of a new doctoral program, but also a symbol of FAH's dedication and innovation in developing Islamic science and culture. Evaluators conducted various assessments ranging from academic presentations to in-depth discussions, ensuring that every aspect of the program had been carefully prepared.
If the assessment is successful, UIN Jakarta's SPI Doctoral Program will be the first of its kind in Indonesia. Hopefully, this will open wider opportunities for the study of Islamic history and strengthen UIN Jakarta's position as a leading center for the study of Islamic civilization.
