FAH Building, FAH News Online – The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held the 2nd International Conference on Digital Humanities (ICODH) 2026 on Wednesday (September 9, 2026). The international conference served as an academic forum to strengthen the development of humanities research that is adaptive to technological advancements, while promoting the critical, ethical, and responsible use of technology.

ICODH 2026 featured a number of keynote speakers from universities in Indonesia and abroad. In the field of History of Islamic Civilization, the speakers included Prof. Dr. Ahmad Sunawari Long from the National University of Malaysia (UKM), Prof. Dr. Jajat Burhanuddin, M.A. from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and Farid Mat Zain, Ph.D. from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The Library Science field featured Prof. Naushad Ali from Aligarh Muslim University, India; Dr. Ida Farida, M.LIS. from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta; and Dr. Priya Vaidya from Lovely Professional University, India.

Meanwhile, the Arabic Literature field featured Prof. Mohd. Sanaullah from Aligarh Muslim University and Ali Hasan Al Bahar, Lc., M.A. from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The Translation Studies field featured Dr. Fathallah Muhammad Fathallah al-Zagzig from Al-Azhar University, Egypt, and Assoc. Prof. Ali Hamed Al-Farsi from Asharkia University, Oman. The English Literature field featured Prof. Danielle Haque, Ph.D. from Minnesota State University, Mankato, United States, as well as Prof. Dr. H. Muhammad Farkhan, M.Pd. from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.

The event was coordinated by the Vice Dean III for Student Affairs, Alumni, and Cooperation of FAH UIN Jakarta, Prof. Usep Abdul Matin, M.A., M.A., Ph.D., who served as the Convener and person in charge of the event. The conference was attended by the Dean of FAH UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, S.Ag., S.S., M.Hum., vice deans, lecturers, students, as well as academics from various universities in Indonesia and abroad.

Also in attendance was Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Tholabi, S.Ag., S.H., M.H., M.A., who represented the Rector and delivered the opening remarks. He expressed his appreciation for the organization of ICODH 2026 as an international academic forum that brings together academics and researchers from Indonesia and various countries. According to him, the theme of Digital Humanities is highly relevant to the changing academic and intellectual landscape amid the rapid development of digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

“The future of technology cannot be separated from the future of humanity,” Prof. Tholabi emphasized.

He stressed that the humanities play an important role in ensuring that technological development remains grounded in human values through ethical reflection, cultural sensitivity, historical wisdom, and critical perspectives. He expressed his hope that ICODH 2026 would generate new ideas, expand academic networks, and create opportunities for international collaboration that contribute to the advancement of education, culture, and knowledge.

Meanwhile, FAH Dean Dr. Ade Abdul Hak expressed his appreciation to all participants and speakers who took part in ICODH 2026. He emphasized that Digital Humanities is not merely about the use of technology, but rather about how technology can be utilized critically, ethically, and responsibly to strengthen humanities research.

According to him, this approach plays a strategic role in the development of research, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the expansion of access to knowledge through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), digital archives and libraries, computational linguistics, as well as digital data management and analysis. He also noted that ICODH 2026 received tremendous enthusiasm, involving 106 presenters, comprising 84 presenters from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and 22 presenters from various institutions in Indonesia and abroad, including the University of Algiers, Aligarh Muslim University, and Yarmouk University.

All speakers delivered presentations in accordance with their respective fields of expertise. The Day 1 program of ICODH 2026 consisted of two sessions and continued until 4:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Participants followed each session enthusiastically and actively engaged in discussions with the speakers. This enthusiasm and active participation received positive responses from the speakers, particularly those representing universities from abroad.

Through the organization of ICODH 2026, FAH UIN Jakarta continues to strengthen its role as an academic platform that promotes interdisciplinary and international collaboration. The conference is expected to open opportunities for research collaboration, expand international academic networks, and strengthen the contribution of the humanities in responding to technological developments and the various challenges of the digital society.
