English Literature Students Undergo Global Standard Academic Writing Techniques with UKM Professors from Malaysia
FAH Building, FAH News Online — English Literature Study Program Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held an International Guest Lecture entitled “Academic Writing for English Literature Students” on 04/12/2025 in the Main Courtroom Floor 2. This activity presented international resource person Prof. Dr. Ahmad Sunawari Long, Professor from the Research Center for Theology and Philosophy Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), a university ranked #04 QS Asia University Rankings South-Eastern Asia and #120 QS World University Rankings. This event was attended by students of the English Literature Study Program as part of strengthening their academic insight and competence in the field of scientific writing..
The event was opened by the Deputy Dean for Student Affairs, Alumni and Cooperation, Prof. Usep Abdul Matin, MA, MA, Ph.D. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of mastering academic writing for English Literature students as comprehensive provisions for thesis preparation, research development and scientific publications.
According Prof. Usep, international guest lecturer activities like this are part of the faculty's efforts to expand global academic networks and increase student competency so that they are able to compete at the international level. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening research culture, improving academic writing skills, and opening students' insight into the standards of scientific writing that apply in world universities, so that this activity is expected to encourage the birth of higher quality and globally competitive scientific work.
Next Prof. Sunawari Long explains effective academic writing techniques, starting from preparing literature reviews to find research gaps, formulating clear problem statements, to developing arguments, citation techniques, and good scientific article structures. He emphasized the importance of reading literature critically, compiling mind mapping, and designing detailed methodologies, including sampling techniques, representativity, and limitation of the study. Prof. Sunawari also explained the importance of the framework of the research as a writing guide and provided an overview of the structure of Master's and Doctoral programs in UKM along with doctoral scholarship opportunities for students interested in continuing their international studies.
Through this guest lecture, students gain practical insight into the academic writing standards that apply at universities of world repute. The English Literature Study Program hopes that this activity can improve students' scientific writing skills and encourage the birth of more quality and competitive research works.
This activity is also a concrete step for FAH in providing an international learning experience for students and strengthening the academic atmosphere towards a global standard faculty. (SN)
