English Literature Student of FAH Wins Silver and Bronze Medals at National Karate Championship

South Tangerang, FAH Online News – Determination and perseverance have once again brought students of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH), Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta, to the national stage. Nur Azlia Rahmantya, a fourth-semester student from the English Literature Program, brought pride to the faculty by securing two medals at the UPI Cup National Karate Championship, held at the Gymnasium of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung, on May 30, 2025.

Azlia earned a bronze medal (3rd place) in the U21 Kumite -61kg (female) category and a silver medal (2nd place) in the University Kumite -50kg & +50kg (female) category. These achievements are a testament to her dedication to martial arts, despite only having started karate after entering university.

“I started learning karate in my first semester. At first, I just wanted to learn self-defense since I never joined any extracurricular activities in school. I was insecure at first, as many of my peers were already black belts. But over time, with support and motivation, I began to improve and was eventually trusted to compete,” said Azlia.

The competition was held at a national level and featured participants from various universities across Indonesia. Despite facing opponents with more experience, Azlia managed to deliver an impressive performance.

“I trained intensively for nearly three months. I practiced 4 to 6 times a week, including strength training,” she explained.

Balancing academics and rigorous training was not an easy task. However, Azlia has developed a disciplined routine—spending her days attending lectures and completing assignments, and her evenings practicing karate. She reserves Saturdays and Sundays strictly for rest to maintain both physical and mental stamina.

Support from family, friends, and her campus environment has also played a crucial role in her progress.

“I’m grateful to be surrounded by supportive people. Their encouragement has helped me grow and stay confident,” she added.

Looking ahead, Azlia hopes to achieve more in upcoming tournaments, possibly even international ones, while continuing to maintain strong academic performance.

When asked if she had any messages for fellow FAH students, Azlia responded with enthusiasm:

“I’ve only been doing karate for a year and a half. So for anyone who’s just discovered a hobby or passion—just be confident and go for it!” she said with a bright smile.

Nur Azlia Rahmantya is a shining example that dedication, courage to start, and smart time management can pave the way to success in any field.
