Discussion on Academic Collaboration between FAH UIN Jakarta and International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)
Jakarta, November 13, 2024 - The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held an online collaborative discussion with academics from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) which took place in the Main Courtroom, 2nd floor of FAH. The discussion that took place on Wednesday was attended by several prominent figures from IIUM, including Prof. Datin Dr. Roslina Othman, Digital Humanities and Bibliometrics expert; Prof. Emeritus Dato' Ts. Dr. Tengku M. Sembok, Information Retrieval and Artificial Intelligence expert; and Dr. Ahmad Fatzilah bin Misman who focuses on community studies and disability communities.
This discussion was also attended by leaders and lecturers at FAH UIN Jakarta, including Dean Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, M.Hum; Deputy Dean I Dr. Ida Farida, MLIS; Deputy Dean II Dr. Siti Amsariah, M.Ag ; Deputy Dean III Prof. Usep Abdul Matin, Ph.D; Head of Siti Maryam Study Program; and other Library Science lecturers such as Dr. Pungki Purnomo, MLIS, Dr. Alfida, MLIS, M.Hum, as well as a number of other lecturers participated in the discussion.
This activity is a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FAH UIN Jakarta and IIUM which was signed on December 11 2019. These discussions reflect concrete steps in strengthening academic collaboration between the two institutions.
Prof. Roslina highlighted the potential of semantic technology development and the utilization of bibliometrics in information management. Meanwhile, Prof. Tengku raised the importance of research on AI from an Islamic perspective, which is relevant to FAH's efforts to develop a new curriculum that includes religious moderation and Islamic integration. This discussion provides an opportunity for FAH to obtain input regarding the development of AI and the application of Digital Humanities in an Islamic academic context.
Deputy Dean II of FAH emphasized that the relevance of digital humanities and Islam in Malaysia can provide inspiration for UIN Jakarta, especially in terms of religious moderation and the integration of Islamic knowledge. Deputy Dean III, Prof. Usep Abdul Matin, Ph.D., revealed plans to submit article proposals for publications involving collaboration with IIUM and plans to immediately publish a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to facilitate the implementation of cooperation. With this MoA, it is hoped that cooperation can become easier and more quickly realized
On the other hand, the Head of Library Science Study Program, Siti Maryam, M.Hum highlighted the urgency of inviting guest lecturers from IIUM in an effort to strengthen the curriculum and research, especially regarding Islamic publishing in Malaysia. The study of library science in the Indonesian context is also considered to have great potential to be discussed in the next meeting session.
Apart from academic collaboration, there are two students from Indonesia who are studying postgraduate studies at IIUM, who come from Jakarta and Makassar. It is hoped that this collaboration, which includes research, curriculum and guest lecturers, will soon be realized for the academic development of both institutions.
With this collaboration, both FAH UIN Jakarta and IIUM hope to continue building sustainable and useful partnerships, especially in the fields of information technology, digital humanities and Islamic-based library science.
