Betawi Cultural Visit: DEMA FAH UIN Jakarta Provides Students with Educational Experiences Beyond Campus

South Tangerang, FAH Online News – The Student Executive Board (DEMA) of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, organized a “Betawi Cultural Visit” activity on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Betawi Cultural Village area of Setu Babakan, South Jakarta. This activity was carried out as an effort to introduce and foster students’ appreciation for Indonesia’s local culture, particularly Betawi culture, through direct learning experiences outside the campus environment.

The activity took place from 09.00 a.m. to 01.00 p.m. WIB and was attended enthusiastically by FAH UIN Jakarta students. The series of events began with participant registration and a departure briefing, followed by the journey to Setu Babakan. Upon arrival, participants attended the opening session along with a brief introduction regarding the history and development of Betawi culture.

During the activity, students had the opportunity to join an educational tour of the Betawi Museum guided directly by the museum management. In this session, participants were introduced to various collections of Betawi culture, ranging from traditional clothing, traditional musical instruments, the history of Betawi society, to various cultural heritages that continue to be preserved today. This activity served as a non-academic learning medium that provided students with new experiences in directly understanding the richness of Indonesian culture.

The Betawi Cultural Visit activity was also accompanied by Mrs. Lily Sudria Wenny, M.Hum., a lecturer at the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Jakarta. In her remarks, she stated that off-campus activities such as this are very important in broadening students’ perspectives. According to her, learning is not only obtained through classroom lectures but also through direct experiences within society and cultural environments.

“Through this activity, students can become more familiar with Indonesian culture firsthand and develop a sense of pride and love for the nation’s cultural heritage,” she said.

After the museum visit session, the activity continued with a traditional Betawi dance workshop guided by instructors from a local dance studio. In this session, students were invited to learn the basic movements of the Betawi “Sirih Kuning” dance while also understanding the cultural meanings contained within it. The atmosphere of the activity was interactive and enthusiastic as participants directly practiced the dance together with the instructors.

In addition to participating in the cultural workshop, students also had the opportunity to enjoy various traditional Betawi culinary specialties available around the Setu Babakan area, such as kerak telor, Betawi-style es goyang, and bir pletok. This experience further increased participants’ interest in Betawi culture, which is rich in traditions, arts, and regional culinary heritage.

The Betawi Cultural Visit activity concluded with a group documentation session and the presentation of a certificate to the management of the Setu Babakan Betawi Cultural Village by Mrs. Lily Sudria Wenny, M.Hum. This activity is expected to become a valuable experience for all students and increase the younger generation’s awareness of preserving Indonesian culture amid the rapid development of modern times.

Through this activity, DEMA FAH UIN Jakarta hopes that students will not only gain academic insight but also develop concern and appreciation for local culture as part of the nation’s identity.
