The Thesis Camp of the Master's Program in Arabic Language and Literature at FAH UIN Jakarta: Building Discipline and Confidence to Accelerate Graduation

Building FAH, FAH Online News — The Master’s Program in Arabic Language and Literature, Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a Thesis Camp activity themed “Accelerating Graduation” on Wednesday (13/05/2026). The event featured Prof. Dr. Darsita Suparno, S.S., M.Hum., CIQnR as the main speaker, with Sholikatus Sa’diyah, M.Pd serving as moderator.

This Thesis Camp was designed as an academic mentoring forum aimed at providing strategic guidance for postgraduate students so they can complete their theses effectively, optimally, and on time.

In her presentation, Prof. Darsita emphasized that self-confidence is the primary asset students must possess in pursuing postgraduate studies. According to her, confidence is not only built through intellectual capability, but also through physical well-being, belief in one’s own abilities, and a positive attitude toward the goals to be achieved.

She also stressed that self-confidence is closely related to discipline. “People do not need to be smarter than others, nor do they need any motivation—what they need is greater discipline than others,” she stated. This discipline includes time management, consistency in worship, and commitment to completing studies on time.

In addition to discussing mental strength and discipline, Prof. Darsita also explained the research orientation at different levels of education. According to her, undergraduate research focuses more on simple analysis, while master’s-level research is directed toward applying theories to solve problems based on identifying their root causes. Meanwhile, doctoral-level research is expected to generate new theories.

She added that research at the master’s level should ideally contain four main components: issue identification, analysis of the causes of problems, application of relevant theories, and measurable research outcomes. Therefore, mastery of research methods is very important so that students do not experience doubt during the thesis-writing process.

In the following session, Prof. Darsita highlighted the importance of a reading culture as the foundation of scientific writing skills. According to her, students need to cultivate the habit of reading reputable scientific journals, previous research findings, and the latest developments in their respective fields of study. With broad literary insight, students will find it easier to discover original research ideas and produce academically strong scholarly works.

She also reminded students of the importance of using reference management tools to help manage bibliographic sources systematically and consistently in thesis writing.

Closing the session, Prof. Darsita conveyed a message about the importance of mental resilience in facing the research process. She emphasized that the journey of writing a thesis will certainly go through ups and downs, so students must be able to maintain their enthusiasm and continuously improve themselves.

“Other people should not make me feel down; instead, I must improve and correct myself,” she affirmed.

Through this Thesis Camp activity, it is hoped that students of the Master’s Program in Arabic Language and Literature at FAH UIN Jakarta will become more motivated, disciplined, and confident in completing their theses on time while producing high-quality academic work.
