Reorientation of Al-Turas Scope: FAH’s Effort Toward an Internationally Reputable Journal

Dean’s Meeting Room, FAH Online News — The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, held a meeting on the reorientation of the scope and areas of study of the Al-Turas Bulletin in April 2026. This activity marks a strategic step in strengthening the journal’s development direction toward international standards.

The meeting involved the editorial team of the Al-Turas Bulletin, FAH lecturers, and expert speakers in the field of linguistics. Among those present were Prof. Dr. Frans Sayogie, S.H., M.H., M.Pd. as a linguistics expert, and Dr. M. Adib Misbachul Islam, M.Hum., Head of the Master’s Program in Arabic Language and Literature, along with several lecturers and editors who have contributed to the journal’s management.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Mauidlotun Nisa, M.Hum. stated that the meeting aimed to discuss updates to the vision and mission of the Al-Turas Bulletin, including adjustments to its scope to ensure relevance with current academic developments.

The Vice Dean I for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ida Farida, M.LIS, expressed appreciation to the editorial team and experts who have consistently contributed to the journal’s development. She emphasized that managing an academic journal is a demanding task that requires strong dedication.

“A journal is a major undertaking that demands extraordinary commitment. The faculty deeply appreciates the team for maintaining the quality and sustainability of the Al-Turas Bulletin,” she stated.

She further added that transforming the scope toward linguistics studies is expected to improve the journal’s quality, including achieving international indexation such as Scopus. According to her, this effort requires support from all academic members, particularly lecturers who actively publish scientific work.

During the presentation session, Prof. Dr. Frans Sayogie explained the importance of linguistics within the humanities. He argued that the term “linguistics” is more appropriate than “applied linguistics,” as humanities inherently involve practical and cultural dimensions.

“Linguistics holds a central role in the humanities because language is part of daily life and social identity. A more focused scope will help enhance the journal’s quality and visibility,” he explained.

He also highlighted the importance of structuring a well-directed scope while still accommodating diverse subject areas to support the journal’s global reputation.

Meanwhile, the second speaker, Dr. Adib, shared insights on philological studies and the importance of researching ancient manuscripts. He explained that such manuscripts contain valuable historical information but require specialized skills to interpret.

“Mastery of language and scripts is essential in understanding ancient manuscripts. Additionally, preparing critical text editions is important to reveal textual variations and preserve intellectual heritage,” he explained.

During the discussion, Prof. Farkhan highlighted the potential of micro-linguistic studies that can be developed across various objects, including manuscript preservation. He noted that linguistic approaches can be widely applied in multiple research areas.

This meeting is expected to serve as a starting point for strengthening the direction of the Al-Turas Bulletin as a more focused, adaptive, and internationally competitive journal. With the adjustment of its scope toward linguistics, FAH is optimistic that the journal will continue to grow and achieve global indexation in the future.
