Filtering Plagiarism, Cultivating Achievement: FAH UIN Jakarta Holds Turnitin Workshop for Students
South Tangerang, FAH Online News — As part of efforts to strengthen academic integrity within the campus environment, the Practicum Librarians (Pustikum) of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, organized an event titled “The Role of Turnitin in Maintaining the Originality of Scientific Works in Higher Education” with the theme “Filtering Plagiarism, Cultivating Achievement.” This event, part of the LO Fest series, was held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Abdul Ghani Theater, 5th Floor of FAH.
The event featured FAH UIN Jakarta Library Science lecturer, Fadhilatul Hamdani, M.Hum., as the keynote speaker. In her opening remarks, the Pustikum advisor, Prisinta Wanastri, S.Sos., M.Hum., emphasized the importance of using tools like Turnitin for students. She highlighted that students often forget to cite ideas that do not originate from their own thinking, which can lead to plagiarism issues. “This activity is very important and its benefits will be greatly felt when students reach their 7th semester, especially when preparing proposal seminars,” she stated.
In line with this, the Head of Pustikum, Nayla, said that Turnitin is not merely a plagiarism detection tool, but also a means to foster academic responsibility among the academic community.
In her presentation, Fadhilatul Hamdani emphasized that originality is a fundamental principle of academic ethics. She explained the technical use of Turnitin, from logging in, uploading documents, to interpreting the similarity index percentage.
She also provided guidance on Turnitin’s filter features to improve checking accuracy, such as exclude quotes (ignoring direct quotations), exclude bibliography (ignoring references), and exclude small matches (ignoring short phrase matches below a certain word count or percentage).
Furthermore, she explained the meaning of color indicators in the Turnitin similarity index results: blue indicates 0% similarity (safe), green indicates 1–24% (low/ generally safe), yellow indicates 25–49% (moderate/needs review), orange indicates 50–74% (high), and red indicates 75–100% (very high, strong potential plagiarism).
In addition to Turnitin usage, participants were also equipped with knowledge of citation ethics using Reference Manager Systems (RMS) such as Zotero or Mendeley. Students were reminded to distinguish between quoting (using quotation marks) and citing (including sources in footnotes or endnotes).
At the end of the session, the speaker warned about Turnitin’s new feature for detecting Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based misconduct. “Students are encouraged to strengthen academic integrity skills, including responsible AI use. If misconduct is detected, documents will be flagged with a red marker, potentially leading to ethics hearings and severe academic sanctions,” she emphasized.
The semi-formal event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, reinforcing FAH UIN Jakarta’s commitment to maintaining integrity and academic trust among its students.
