An Academic Breakthrough: FAH UIN Jakarta Presents Guidelines for Artwork to Replace Thesis
South Tangerang, FAH News Online - Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta held a Literature Consortium Meeting on Friday, February 6 2026, in the Main Courtroom on the 2nd Floor of FAH. This strategic meeting was attended by faculty leaders, including the Dean of FAH Dr. Ade Abdul Hak. S.Ag., SS, M.Hum., CIQnR, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs Dr, Ida Farida, M. LIS, Deputy Dean for General Administration Dr. Siti Amsariah, M.Ag, and Chair of the Literature Consortium Dr. Ulil Abshar SS, M. Hum. The main agenda of the meeting was the finalization of guidelines for the preparation of works of art as a non-thesis graduation route for students, which became an academic breakthrough aimed at accommodating creative potential for literature students without ignoring scientific standards.
Dean of FAH UIN Jakarta, Dr. Ade Abdul Hak, emphasized that the preparation of these guidelines is a direct mandate from the Chancellor which must be ratified immediately. He stressed that this shift in the format of the final assignment should not detract from the scientific weight that characterizes higher education.
"Work of art deserves to be an alternative graduation equivalent to scientific work, while still upholding academic accountability," said Dr. Ade Abdul Hak at the meeting. He added, "Guidelines for graduation need to contain objective assessment criteria, including originality, creative process and relevance of literary scholarship. The guidelines prepared must be in line with institutional policies and adaptive to the dynamics and innovation of literary works of art.".
The discussion at the meeting also discussed the technical classification of works that were used as replacements for theses. Chair of the Literary Consortium, Dr. Ulil Abshar, highlighted the need for a clear distinction in the requirements for each type of work. One of the important rules agreed upon was standardization for novels, which were required to have a minimum of 45,000 words or around 50 pages, and raised themes relevant to Islam and Indonesianness. Apart from that, the rules also apply to students who want to write short stories, namely they are required to write a minimum of 7 short stories with a minimum length of 2,000 words each.
In closing, FAH UIN Jakarta hopes that this breakthrough can immediately open up opportunities for students to have more freedom in expressing their interests and talents. Without compromising academic quality, students can graduate through a measurable and professionally recognized creative path.
